Each year our most popular article is people wanting to know how to make money online.
This comes as no surprise to us (who doesn't want a little extra spending cash?) and so we make sure to keep an updated list of ways that you, our readers, can stuff a little more dime in your pockets.
Whether you're a stay-at-home parent looking to help ends meet, a bachelor(ette) looking to supplement your income, a college student looking for some spending cash or none of the above, there is a way for you to make money online.
Since there are thousands of ways one can make money we've decided to focus this particular list purely on how to make money online.
The best part about this list is that they're all legitimate ways to earn money from your cell phone or computer – no worrying about getting scammed – no dealing with shady people – no using sketchy websites.
To be fair, not everything here is for everyone.
Some tasks are super easy and will earn you a few bucks in just a few minutes – others are full-time jobs that allow you to work from home should you choose to.
It's all about how much time you can afford to commit.
Note: You'll need a valid email address to participate in just about everything below.
Lastly, despite whatever you searched for on Google to get here, the reality is that there really is no “quick way” to earn globs of cash like many would have you believe.
People and companies don't just give away free money without an end-game in place.
If it seems too good to be true, it generally is. Be careful with your personal information.
How to Make Money Online
It should go without saying that our favorite way to make money online is by blogging. Jeff and I started monetizing VTX just over 6 months ago now and it has really changed our lives.
While holding down full time jobs, we started writing articles about things that interested us (like finance and fitness) in our spare time.
Within 3 months of trying to monetize our websites we were pulling in over $7,000/month.
Fast forward just a few months and we're now making over $12,000 a month.
Since then we've started additional websites, hired out freelance writers, recruited web-designers and turned it all into a full-fledged business.
All this with:
- 0 professional writing experience.
- 0 website knowledge.
- 0 business experience.
Seriously, just two ordinary guys who made a tiny investment and turned it into a lot more.
I tell you all this because I am constantly in awe of just how much things have changed in such a short time.
If you're passionate about something, and possess even a modest creativity to write about it, this is something that you can do too.
It is so stupidly easy (and cheap!) to start that literally anyone can do it.
Popular things you can choose to blog about:
- health & fitness
- beauty & fashion
- personal development/life coaching
For as little as $2.95/month (or $36 per year) you can start – this even includes a FREE domain name (a $15 value). Seriously, for less than a cup of coffee you can start something that could truly change your life. It absolutely did for Jeff and I. If you decide it isn't for you, you can cancel and get a full refund.
Once you sign up with HostGator and you're all set, check out these articles where we show exactly what you need to do to start driving visitors to your website (and start making money). In just 4 months Jeff was able to grow one of our blogs viewership over 1 million percent.
2. Watch Videos
Surprised? We're not.
Advertisers will do just about anything get their ads in front of viewers nowadays…even if you don't buy anything.
Whats that mean for you? Money $$$.
- Cat videos (really).
- Movie previews.
- Celebrity gossip.
- Current news.
Whatever floats your boat.
Most of the video playlists on Swagbucks last just a few minutes (up to half an hour) and so if you have a little time to kill while you're loafing around on the couch, may as well make a few bucks (plus, they'll even give you a free $5 just for signing up).
3. Lose Weight
Ever the pessimist, HealthyWage doesn't think you have it in you to actually go out and lose weight. In fact, they're literally betting you can't.
Don't Be a Statistic
Sadly, more often than not, they're right. About 90% of people fail with their weight loss goals.
But if you're one of the 10% of people out there disciplined enough to shed those pounds you can be a showcase to others on how to make money online.
You Can Do This
If you check out their bet calculator, a $30 monthly bet to lose 20 lbs in 6 months could net you anywhere between $200-$529.41…(come on guys, 20 lbs in 6 months…a lot of you can do this).
Now I've tinkered with the calculator a little but it looks like even some of the personal bets could net you just shy of $10,000 as well.
The above payout was with the max bet of $995 per month, but still, 30 lbs over 6 months to win nearly $7,000?
So far this year we've had 4 VTX'ers sign-up with one betting as little as $180 and another as much as $600 [check them out below]. We don't know how they've done yet but we're eager to see if they made that 10% category.
(challenges often have a 3-6 month minimum so we're still waiting to see how they did!)
Now matter how you slice it, if you want to lose weight (and you're dead serious about doing it), then you may as well get paid for it.
We don't condone being stupid with your money, after all that goes against what we are all about, but if you want to put a few dollars on the line or simply bet against a few friends, a little healthy pressure can't hurt. It's one of the more unique ways on how to make money online that we could come up with.
If you've got a knack for grammar and catching errors then proofreading may be a good fit for you.
Caitlin of Proofread Anywhere made $43,000 in 2014 proofreading part-time while studying abroad. She did so well in the ensuing years that she now offers a course teaching people how to make money online from the comfort of their own home.
5. Get Paid to Test Websites
Each site varies, but there are number of companies out there that will pay you to test websites.
Companies want to know how easy their websites are to use and the information you give them about the process is extremely valuable. To the tune of $8-12 per test (generally between 10-30 minutes) depending on the site.
Best part of it is, you are working from home and you are making your own schedule. Its tough to beat that.
- Whatusersdo – Pay is $8 (or more) per test. Tests take around 15-20 minutes (you need a Mac or PC + mic).
- Enroll – Get paid to test websites before they are published. Earn cash rewards.
- UserFeel – This company pays around $10 per test.
- Analysia – Tests take around 15 minutes to complete. Pay is $10 per test.
- TryMyUI – Tests takes around 15-20 minutes to complete. Pay is $10 per test.
Part of being fiscally responsible is showing that you care about your money. Even if you don't know much about investing, there is no reason that you cant take 20 minutes out of your day and move your savings to an account that at least gets you 1-2% each year.
Discover offers a high-interest yielding savings account and it almost certainly demolishes the near .01% your current bank is giving you.
I don't know about you but getting a $50 return on every $5,000 in my savings sounds a whole lot better than getting 50 cents.
If you've got tens of thousands of dollars just sitting in a savings account earning you nothing, then it's time to be an adult and take a few minutes out of your day to fix this.
1-2% APR is just the beginning though. Depending on your age, you should be netting around 7% year with a balanced portfolio.
Have $50,000 in savings? That is $3,500 dollars PER YEAR that you are throwing in the trash if you're not investing.
Sound like its way too good to be true?
It's not. Its exactly what we teach you to do here at VTX Capital and you can get started in mere minutes.
If you're looking opportunities on how to make money online and you're not doing either of the two things above, you're missing out on thousands of dollars per year that could be in your pockets.
7. Cashback App for Grocery Shopping
Ibotta is one of the best money saving apps out there for grocery shoppers. If you're going to shop name brand, we can all but guarantee that Ibotta offers a rebate on whatever it is you're buying.
To get your cash back, all you have to do is scan an item's bar code, take a photo of your receipt, and the money gets into your account within 48 hours.
You even get $10 just for signing up, and they’ll also pay you $5 more for each friend you refer.
Your earnings potential is unlimited. Not bad considering you’re helping your friends save money and handing them an extra ten bucks at the same time!
8. Make Money Online Surveys
The PennyHoarder estimates you can make about $225 per month by registering for several survey sites.
Knock out a few of these each day and the money adds up:
9. Install Money-Making Apps
Another easy way to make money online free is with the desktop app Shop Tracker. It will pay you $3 instantly (and then $3 per month afterwards) if you use Amazon to do your normal shopping. Say hello to a FREE $36 per year.
Shop Tracker wants to know what sort of products Amazon users are purchasing and they're willing to pay to see it.
To qualify you need to:
- Shop on Amazon.
- Be at least 18 and live in the United States.
- Have Windows 7+ (sorry, no Mac users).
If you can manage those requirements, head over to Shop Tracker and download the app now.
Smart Panel will pay you $5 for installing their app and allowing it to collect information about your everyday device phone, tablet or computer usage. It's one of the easiest ways we know of on how to make money online.
The Smart App runs in the background while anonymously and securely collecting statistical data about how you use those devices.
The research data collected by the app is used to help your favorite apps, websites, and technology companies improve their services and features for everyone.
Furthermore, you get an additional $5 every single month you keep it installed + a loyalty bonus every 3 months. It’s hard to turn down free money and merely installing an app is about as easy as it gets.
10. How to Make Money Online: Opening an Online Shop
You don't have to open an online shop intent on making a full time income.
To the contrary, you can use a plethora of online marketplaces to get rid of unused items around the home or even try your hand at flipping rare/antique items for a profit.
